Horses, Yaks And Eunuch's Boots: Tibetan and Mongolian Adventures

>> BATA SHOE MUSEUM <<
www.batashoemuseum.ca

Our appreciation extends to Caroline Walker and Ruth Malloy for their informative and insightful presentation and to the Bata Shoe Museum for hosting the event. Participants enjoyed complimentary free access to the Museum for the presentation.

Ruth Malloy and Caroline Walker, CCS members of long-standing, travelled in Mongolia and Northwestern China last summer in search of adventure - and, yes, in search of their common heritage of decorated leather boots with their toes turned up. The story goes that this unique feature is intended to confuse an enemy, who will not be able to tell if the wearers are coming or going.

The links between Mongolia and Tibet run long and deep and the deepness is in their religious beliefs with their roots in shamanism and the Mongolians' adoption of Tibetan or Lamaism Buddhism. Ruth and Caroline will talk about these links as illustrated by by a pair of throat-singer's boots from Mongolia and rare Tibetan High Lama's boots found in Qinghai, China. As well, a Lama's robe and hat from the Yellow Hat Sect, over a hundred years old, speaks to their common belief.

Caroline and Ruth will share their slides and film about their trip, including their visit to a family of pastoralists in the isolated Khanuy Valley. Mrs. Sonja Bata will describe the work of the Museum and preview the up-and-coming exhibit Watched By Heaven, Tied To The Earth: Summoning The Animals on Chinese Children's Shoes and Garments, opening in March 2005.
